  • Over 35 crore Indians lack access to nutritious food, healthcare, housing, and education
  • India’s wealth inequality remains stark, with 1% owning 40% of assets
  • Economic growth must be matched by inclusive, equitable development

A recent report released by a United Nations agency has revealed a concerning reality, nearly 35 crore Indians, or one in every four citizens, are unable to access a quality standard of living. Despite India’s economic growth and reduced poverty rates in recent years, the report points to glaring inequalities and inadequate access to basic needs for a large section of the population.

According to the report, millions of Indians are lacking access to nutritious food, safe housing, quality education, and healthcare services, the foundational pillars of a dignified life. This disparity highlights the gap between economic development and actual human well-being.

While India continues to rise as a global economic power, the benefits of growth remain unevenly distributed. The report further states that the top 1% of India’s population controls over 40% of the country’s total wealth, whereas the bottom 50% hold only about 6.4%. This stark inequality underlines systemic issues in wealth distribution and access to opportunities.

Experts argue that while India’s poverty rate has fallen, the focus must now shift toward ensuring equitable development. This includes targeted investments in education, public health infrastructure, nutrition programs, and housing for marginalised communities.

The report’s findings are a wake-up call for policymakers to look beyond economic numbers and address the qualitative aspects of life for all citizens. Without inclusive growth, the nation’s true potential may remain unrealised.
