A devastating flash flood in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district has left a 10-month-old girl, Nitika, orphaned. The tragedy, triggered by a cloudburst on the night of June 30–July 1 in Talwara village, claimed the lives of her parents and grandmother. In a compassionate gesture, the Himachal Pradesh government has declared Nitika as the “child of the state” under the Chief Minister’s Sukh Ashraya Yojana.

Nitika’s father Ramesh, mother Radha Devi, and grandmother Poorno Devi were swept away while trying to divert floodwaters from their home. Only Nitika survived, later found crying alone by a neighbour, Prem Singh, who alerted the family. She is currently in the care of her aunt, Kirana Devi, in Shikhori village.

Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi announced that the state will fully support Nitika’s upbringing, including education, healthcare, shelter, clothing, and future career aspirations. “Whether she wishes to become a doctor, engineer or officer, the government will fund her journey,” he said.

Launched in 2023, the Sukh Ashraya Yojana offers orphaned children financial assistance from ages 18 to 27, professional training, and funds for housing or startups. Nitika will also receive festival allowances, stipends, and travel support.

The government’s swift response to this heart-wrenching tragedy has been widely appreciated, with many praising the move as a humane and inspiring step in disaster relief efforts.
