Ashwin wasn’t considered for the 2019 World Cup with the team management having backed the Kul-Cha (Kuldeep Yadav- Yuzvendra Chahal) pair. Ashwin has made a comeback to the squad with Yuzvendra Chahal’s flight offering the batsmen more scope to free their arms on a regular basis.
We look at 2 more bowlers who had a similar trajectory.
Adil Rashid
Adil Rashid was picked in the 2011 World Cup squad considering the spin friendly conditions in India. He did not feature in the 11 man squad regularly due to senior spinner Graeme Swann and Ravi Bopara taking up the role. However, his form subsequently declined. In the 2015 World Cup, he lost his position to James Tredwell. England failed to qualify to the quarter finals in that event and a major overhaul of the team was underway since then. He was part of this in light of regained form and played a crucial role in the team’s maiden trophy in the 2019 world cup.
Ashish Nehra
Ashish Nehra played a crucial role in India’s campaign in the 2003 World Cup wherein the team reached the final. He picked up 6 wickets in a game against England. In 2007 however, he wasn’t included with potential injury risks and presence of other fast bowlers such as Munaf Patel and Sreeshanth. He however was included in the squad in 2011 when India went ahead to win the world cup. He even played a crucial role ijn the semi final picking up 2 wickets and containing the flow of runs. He missed out on the final on account of an injury.
A World Cup is only decided in the final delivery of the final match but if you believe in signs, look no further.
