2023 has marked the deadliest year for road users in Bengaluru in the past 13 years, with an average of 75 fatalities occurring every month.
According to Bengaluru Traffic Police data, a total of 823 lives were lost in 794 accidents this year until November, representing the highest number of road crash-related fatalities in a single year since 2011.
Comparatively, the previous peak was in 2016, with 754 fatal road crashes and 793 victims. The figures for 2023 significantly surpass those of 2011, which recorded 727 fatal crashes resulting in 757 casualties.
Despite an overall decline in the number of road crashes from 7,506 in 2016 to 4,499 until November 2023, the decrease does not offer much relief. The rising fatality rate indicates that a higher proportion of road crashes are proving lethal. In 2023, over 17% of all road crashes resulted in fatalities, whereas slightly over 10% of road crashes in 2016 were fatal.
Fatal crashes were concentrated outside the central business district (CBD), with the Yelahanka traffic police station limits witnessing 54 fatal crashes and 59 victims, followed by Kengeri with 50 crashes and 51 victims, and Devanahalli with 49 crashes and 51 victims.
