For the first time, government schools in Karnataka will receive dedicated funds for extracurricular activities. Under the initiative "Rangotsava," around 2,100 schools—mostly high schools—will receive ₹10,000 each this year to purchase equipment for arts and cultural activities.

The grant, provided by Samagra Shikshana Karnataka (SSK), can be used to buy musical instruments like veena, tabla, and harmonium, as well as painting materials, costumes for dance, and makeup kits, according to an SSK circular dated January 20, 2025. The aim is to create a vibrant and engaging learning environment through cultural activities.
With over 45,000 government schools in the state, including 15,000 high schools, only those with specialized extracurricular teachers on campus will qualify for the grant. A simple instrument or a good costume can spark interest in students. This initiative encourages them to explore their innate talents.
Students already participate in competitions like Pratibha Karanji, and this funding will help schools form committees to decide on necessary purchases. The circular also encouraged integrating performing arts into daily lessons, such as using drama for history or music for science.
However, some educators argue that ₹10,000 is insufficient for major equipment. "Many schools lack specialized teachers. Officials suggested schools could supplement funds through CSR initiatives or school committees.
