The 25-year-old opener, who has scored over 1,800 runs in 32 Tests, now steps into the leadership role at a crucial juncture for Indian cricket.

Gill’s calm temperament and technical finesse have drawn widespread praise, and his leadership credentials were established during his stint as captain of the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. His appointment marks the start of a new era for India in the longest format, especially in the absence of seasoned campaigners like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
The five-match Test series against England, beginning June 20, will be Gill’s first major test as skipper.
The selectors have named a youthful and well-rounded squad, blending experience with fresh talent. Notably, three Karnataka cricketers, KL Rahul, Prasidh Krishna, and Karun Nair have earned spots in the Test side, underlining the state’s strong presence in the national setup.
