In a concerning revelation, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported that 633 Indian students have died abroad over the past five years due to various reasons, including natural causes, accidents, and medical conditions. The data, disclosed during the ongoing monsoon session of the Lok Sabha, highlighted that these fatalities occurred across 41 countries.

Canada and the United States emerged as the nations with the highest number of Indian student deaths. Canada recorded 172 deaths, while the US saw 108. Tragically, 19 Indian students were killed in attacks, with Canada accounting for nine of these incidents and the US six.
The details were provided by Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, in response to a query from Kerala MP Kodikunnil Suresh. Singh elaborated on the causes, stating that deaths resulted from a mix of natural causes, accidents, and medical conditions.
Following Canada and the US, the United Kingdom reported 58 deaths, Australia 57, Russia 37, and Germany 24. Additionally, a solitary death was reported from neighbouring Pakistan.
The statistics have prompted discussions on the safety and well-being of Indian students pursuing education overseas, emphasizing the need for enhanced support and measures to ensure their security and health.
