The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has conducted potential locations for a second airport near Bengaluru. The team is expected to give its opinion within a month. After that, the matter will be handed over to experienced airport development companies for a detailed study. The final decision on the location will be taken by the government based on this analysis, according to Infrastructure development minister MB Patil.

He explained that the suitability of the airport’s location will depend on factors such as passenger flow, cargo needs and industrial demands. Currently, Bengaluru’s airport is located in Devanahalli. There is a rule that prevents the building of another airport within a 150 kilometer radius until the year 2033. However, if preparations begin now, the second airport could be ready for development by 2030. If not, it might be delayed until at least 2040.
In the meantime, senior Congress leader TB Jayachandra is trying to bring an airport to the Sira region. On the other hand, BJP leader Arvind Bellad has suggested that a new airport should be built in a location that would benefit North Karnataka.
Elsewhere, the Vijayapura airport is close to being inaugurated. A case related to environmental clearance is still pending in the Supreme Court but is still expected to be resolved soon. Once that happens, the airport could be inaugurated within six months.
