In a tragic incident from Hubballi, a man accused of kidnapping and murdering a five-year old girl was shot dead in a police encounter on Sunday. According to Hubballi Dharwad Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar, the accused had tried to assault the police and hurled stones at them, leading an officer to fire two rounds in self-defense. The man was taken to the hospital for medical treatment but was declared dead on arrival.

The incident occurred within the limits of the Ashok Nagar police station, just hours after the girl had been reported missing. Her body was later found in the bathroom of an abandoned, sheet-roofed building. The girl, whose family hails from Koppal district, had accompanied her mother to work. Her mother was employed as a housemaid and beauty parlor assistant, while her father worked as a painter. The girl was abducted from one of the houses her mother had been working at.

Though there have been unconfirmed reports of sexual assault, police have stated that a medical examination is underway and the investigation is ongoing. The shocking crime sparked outrage in the local community, prompting a large group of residents to gather outside the Ashok Nagar police station demanding justice for the child and her grieving family.
