  • Proposal to rename Ramanagara as Bengaluru Dakshina is under discussion
  • Kumaraswamy accused DK Shivakumar’s move as being undertaken under the behest of real estate interests
  • Ramanagara is a well planned scientific district: Kumaraswamy

Deputy Chief Minister D.K Shivakumar’s promise to add Kanakapura to Bengaluru on Vijaya Dashami has been the talk of the town ever since. There were fears that giving a preferential treatment to Kanakapura might antagonise other portions of Ramanagara and this might hinder the prospects of Congress in elections. Therefore, a new proposal to rename Ramanagara inclusive of Channapatna, Ramanagara, Kanakapura, Magadi and Harohalli taluks as Bengaluru Dakshina is under discussion. He threw light on other examples of areas being assimilated into Bengaluru.

Former Chief Minister of Karnataka, HD Kumaraswamy has come out strongly against DK Shivakumar stating that the proposition is improbable. “Adding Kanakapura to Bengaluru isn’t possible in 7 lives,” he said. He stated that Ramanagara is a well planned scientific district and that this move would be an inconvenience to its people who would reject it. He accused DK Shivakumar’s move as being undertaken under the behest of real estate interests. He also hinted that this would become a means for the Deputy Chief Minister who according to him has many undisclosed benami properties in the region to capitalise on through this move. “Chikkaballapur, Chamarajnagar, Yadgir, Koppal and Gadag were also made into districts but for the greater good not for the benefit of the Chief Minister,” he expressed.
