Karnataka moves resolution to scrap NEET

It becomes the second state after TN

It feel it is detrimental to the needs of the poor

Karnataka has become the second state after Tamil Nadu to decide on scrapping the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), following a national outcry over a recent paper leak. In a cabinet meeting held on Monday, the state government resolved to pass a resolution in both Houses of the legislature during the ongoing Monsoon session, seeking exemption from NEET and proposing the establishment of state-specific assessments for medical college admissions. The resolution is expected to be introduced in the assembly on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The Karnataka government has argued that NEET is detrimental to the interests of poor and rural students. It is considering either replacing NEET with another exam or reintroducing the previous Common Entrance Test (CET) system for admissions to both engineering and medical colleges.

In addition, the cabinet has decided to oppose the central government’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative, which aims to synchronize assembly and Lok Sabha elections. “The government may move a resolution in this regard in both Houses of the legislature,” a senior minister stated.

The cabinet also expressed opposition to the upcoming delimitation of assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies, arguing that such an exercise, based on population, would reduce Karnataka’s political representation in the Lok Sabha. The state fears that delimitation could increase the political influence of North Indian states, thereby diminishing the South’s political heft.
