Amid remarks from US President Donald Trump discouraging Apple from expanding its manufacturing in India, the tech company has clarified that its plans in the country remain firmly in place. Despite Trump’s call for Apple to shift focus back to the US, the company has reassured Indian officials that its commitment to India as a production hub is unchanged.

During a recent event, Trump expressed disappointment with Apple CEO Tim Cook, referencing the company’s growing operations in India. He questioned why Apple was investing so heavily overseas and insisted the US should be its primary base for manufacturing. Though he acknowledged India’s attractive trade terms, including minimal import duties, Trump made it clear he opposed Apple’s growing presence there.
However, Apple has conveyed to Indian authorities that it is continuing with its current strategy, which includes expanding its manufacturing footprint in the country. The company’s engagement with India has only deepened over recent years, with the nation playing an increasingly vital role in Apple’s global supply chain.
Industry insiders in India have downplayed Trump’s remarks, saying they are unlikely to have a major effect. Experts in the electronics sector believe that India is on a solid path and that its push to develop local manufacturing of electronic components and devices will continue unaffected.
Apple’s contract partners like Foxconn and Pegatron have already scaled up operations in India, and iPhone production for both domestic sales and exports has reached record levels. With strong government backing through initiatives like the PLI scheme, India remains a critical market for Apple’s future.
