  • AI is speeding up drug discovery: Naveen Gullapalli at LHIF 2025
  • It aids in molecule development and genome analysis
  • Goal is to cut drug development time by 50%

At the 14th edition of the Lifesciences and Healthcare Innovation Forum (LHIF), held under the theme “AI Disrupt: Transforming Diagnosis, Discovery and Delivery,” Naveen Gullapalli, Managing Director, Amgen and a key speaker at the event, highlighted the transformative role artificial intelligence is playing across the entire lifecycle of innovative medicines.

Gullapalli emphasized that AI is already being used to develop new molecules and better understand population genetics. “Amgen, for instance, owns one of the largest genetic data sets with over one million whole genomes,” he noted. This vast repository, when combined with AI, is helping researchers understand key characteristics of populations, significantly accelerating the discovery process.

He pointed out that the power of generative AI is already enabling pharmaceutical companies to produce the right information required for regulatory submissions and faster medicine registration. “The success rate for innovative medicines has traditionally been just 5–7%, and the process from ideation to delivery can take 10–14 years,” Gullapalli explained. “But with AI, we are on the path to cut this timeline by nearly 50%.”

Despite the historically tough success rates, Gullapalli expressed optimism. “These are truly exciting times for the pharmaceutical industry. AI offers unparalleled opportunities to revolutionize how we diagnose diseases, discover drugs, and deliver care,” he concluded.

The forum, organized by the MeitY-NASSCOM Centre of Excellence, brings together innovators, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore the future of healthcare technology.
