In a significant political development, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has entrusted Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah with a key national role. He has been appointed as the President of the newly formed AICC OBC Advisory Council. The move is seen as part of Congress’ strategy to leverage Siddaramaiah’s influence among backward communities on a national scale.

The council, approved by AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, will comprise 24 members, including four former chief ministers and several senior Congress leaders. Its mandate is to deliberate on challenges faced by backward classes across India and formulate actionable policy recommendations for the Congress party.
The first meeting of the council is scheduled for July 15 at Bharat Jodo Bhavan in the KPCC office on Queen’s Road, Bengaluru. Around 90 prominent Congress leaders from various states—including MPs, former union ministers, and state leaders—are expected to attend.
Notable members include Ashok Gehlot, Bhupesh Baghel, V. Narayanaswamy, Sachin Pilot, Dr. Veerappa Moily, and B.K. Hariprasad. Advisory Council Convener Dr. Anil Jaihind and Secretary Jitender Baghel will coordinate its functioning.
This initiative marks Siddaramaiah’s formal entry into national politics and signals Congress’ renewed focus on strengthening its connect with backward communities ahead of future elections. The council will play a crucial role in shaping Congress' backward class outreach and welfare agenda.
