Air India has officially begun construction on a sprawling maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s strategic expansion. The project, which covers 35 acres, is part of Air India’s broader plan to establish Bengaluru as a central hub for its global operations.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Thursday, signaling the start of work on a mega hangar capable of servicing both wide-body and narrow-body aircraft under a single roof. This facility is expected to enhance Air India’s in-house maintenance capabilities, particularly as the airline group continues to modernize its fleet and expand its global reach.

The Tata-owned airline has partnered with Singapore Airlines Group’s SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC) to develop this state-of-the-art MRO facility. Earlier this year, Air India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Karnataka government to further this initiative.

Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the MRO facility will feature advanced overhead teleplatforms, cranes, universal docking systems, and the largest vertical lift hangar doors in India. The facility’s capacity is expected to expand, including additional hangars for aircraft servicing and paint jobs.

This development aligns with Air India’s ambitious fleet expansion and modernization efforts, as the airline seeks to solidify its position as a leading global carrier.
