The Conservative Party led by former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Rishi Sunak faced a crushing defeat in the 2024 General Election. Rishi addressed a gathering at Downing Street in London after having submitted his resignation from the post of Prime Minister. Rishi’s wife Akshata Murty was also present on this occasion. This has led to trolling on social media. 

Akshata stood behind her husband during his speech. The dress she had worn on this occasion has become a subject of discussion on social media. She held an umbrella and stood in an upright position. Netizens commented on the photos that emerged from the event.

The colour and the quintessential nature of the attire was ridiculed. A portion of the internet also made remarks on Akshata’s fashion sense. Reports indicate that the dress costs Rs 42,000. “Akshata Murty (serious face) standing behind her husbandRishi Sunak in a red, white & blue dress holding an umbrella as he weasels his way out of Downing Street is the stuff of a million memes,” Media personality JJ Hunsecker stated on the microblogging site X (formerly known as Twitter). A user remarked that the blue stripes on the dress are pointing to the red stripes which in a way is an indication of the results of the election wherein the Labour Party which is associated with the colour red emerged victorious over the Conservative Party associated with the colour blue.
