In a move that has sparked mixed reactions across Karnataka, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has signed an agreement with Amul to open kiosks at 10 Namma Metro stations across Bengaluru. The Gujarat-based dairy giant will now operate outlets at prominent locations including Majestic, Indiranagar, Trinity, Jayanagar, and Banashankari stations.

This decision has stirred controversy, with several Kannadigas expressing displeasure over the choice of a non-local brand, especially when Karnataka’s own dairy cooperative, Nandini, already has a strong presence in the state. The criticism intensified over the fact that Amul is originally based in Gujarat, and many viewed this as a sidelining of local enterprise.

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar addressed the issue publicly, stating that the BMRCL had floated a global tender for retail space at metro stations. Amul emerged as the winner through a transparent bidding process, and hence, changes cannot be made post-allotment. However, he assured that directions have also been given to accommodate Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF)’s Nandini outlets at eight other locations within the metro network.

While supporters of the move cite fair bidding and consumer choice, critics argue that more should have been done to prioritize homegrown brands like Nandini that have served Karnataka loyally for decades.
