Ananya emphasized need for stronger measures for safety of women

She suggested that every sector should have panels like Hema Committee

She stressed that the problem is not unique to the film industry

At the India Today Mind Rocks Youth Summit 2024, Bollywood actor Ananya Panday emphasized the need for stronger measures to ensure the safety of women across all industries. Citing the Hema Committee as a model, she suggested that every sector should have similar panels to address issues of harassment and exploitation.

Speaking on the issue, Panday said, “It’s crucial for every industry to form a committee like the Hema Committee, where women unite and advocate for safety measures. While progress has been made, with people now openly discussing the issue, there is still a long way to go. We are facing much larger battles.”

She also highlighted the positive changes that have been implemented within the film industry, including helpline numbers and clauses in contracts aimed at ensuring women’s safety. “Our call sheets now have helpline numbers where women can anonymously report any issues,” Panday added. However, she stressed that the problem is not unique to the film industry, urging for broader action.

Her remarks come in the wake of a redacted version of the Justice Hema Committee report, which unveiled disturbing accounts of harassment faced by women in the Malayalam film industry.

Ananya’s latest OTT debut, Call Me Bae, produced by Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment, is currently streaming on Prime Video.
