TheYuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) government organised a Rythu bazar to sell tomatoes at Rs 50 per kg as a welfare measure for the public troubled by price rise. However, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) began selling the tomatoes at Rs 30.
Tomato prices in Andhra Pradesh are predicted to touch Rs 200 by the end of July. At the moment, they have crossed the petrol price at Rs 144. The reason for the price rise is credited to heavy rainfall resulting in decreased yields this time around. The looming threat of floods in Himachal Pradesh is not helping the cause either.
How such one horse tricks would measure against much larger unaddressed problems is something that the political parties have to answer.
Highly-priced tomatoes are hurting the nation!
As the tomato rates hit the sky, many eateries have decided to shelve it in order to keep the prices under check. Earlier last week, McDonald's decided to drop tomatoes from its burgers. Close on the heels, chaat centres in Bengaluru have decided to give tomatoes a miss, in order to ensure the prices of dishes do not rise. Now, the Centre has actually entered the fray, asking southern states like Karnataka to export onions to the northern states to ensure fair supply.
