The Karnataka government is actively considering integrating Anekal into Greater Bengaluru, as part of a broader effort to enhance infrastructure and civic services in rapidly urbanising areas. Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced the proposal during a development event in Hennagara Gram Panchayat, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 78 projects.

The integration plan includes key upgrades such as Metro rail connectivity and improved water supply through the Cauvery project. Tenders have already been issued to supply 30 million litres per day of Cauvery water to Anekal, aiming to resolve persistent water scarcity in the region. A Detailed Project Report is also underway to extend Bengaluru’s Metro network to suburban hubs like Jigani, Sarjapur, Bannerghatta, and Anekal—areas witnessing swift population growth but still lacking robust infrastructure.

The move follows the recent enactment of the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill, 2024. With the Governor’s assent granted on April 24, the legislation sets the stage for decentralised urban administration.

Political backing for Anekal’s inclusion is strong, with several senior leaders supporting the move. The state government sees this as a step toward balanced urban development and aims to ensure equitable growth across all city zones.
