After a prolonged wait, the Indian Army may finally receive its first batch of Apache AH-64E attack helicopters, significantly boosting its combat readiness along the western border. The delivery, initially expected by mid-2024, had faced repeated delays owing to technical and logistical issues from the United States.

Under a $600 million deal signed in 2020, India is set to receive six Apache helicopters from the U.S. These combat aircraft were intended to equip the Army Aviation Corps’ first Apache squadron, raised in Jodhpur in March 2024. However, nearly 15 months since its formation, the squadron remains without its core weaponry.

The first delivery, originally scheduled for May-June 2024, was rescheduled to December due to supply chain disruptions. Now, according to defence sources, the first three helicopters may arrive within weeks, with the remaining three expected later this year.

These advanced AH-64E Apaches are equipped with high-precision weapons systems, powerful engines, and superior avionics, making them a crucial asset for battlefield support and frontline offensive roles. Their deployment is particularly significant as the Army strengthens its strategic posture on the western front following Operation Sindoor.

With the long-awaited induction nearing, the Army’s attack capabilities are set to receive a major upgrade, ending a frustrating phase of delays and anticipation.
