In a significant milestone for both Apple Inc. and India’s manufacturing sector, the tech giant will, for the first time, produce its premium iPhone Pro and Pro Max models in India this year.

This move marks a notable shift in Apple’s global manufacturing strategy, aligning with India’s growing prominence as a high-tech manufacturing hub.

Foxconn Technology Group, Apple’s key partner, is set to begin assembling the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models at its factory in Tamil Nadu within weeks of their global launch this fall.

The company has already initiated training thousands of workers to ensure the production meets the global timeline. This expansion comes as Apple continues to diversify its manufacturing operations outside of China to mitigate risks related to geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Washington.

India’s ascent as a major player in Apple’s supply chain began in 2021, fueled by financial incentives from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government aimed at attracting high-end manufacturing. As a result, Apple assembled $14 billion worth of iPhones in India during the fiscal year ending March 2024, accounting for up to 14% of its global output.

While Foxconn leads the charge, other Apple partners like Pegatron and Tata Group are also expected to soon begin production of the Pro models, which feature advanced cameras, titanium bodies, and larger batteries, requiring specialized manufacturing capabilities.
