The 3-D printing technique would be tested for the preparation of new generation smartwatches by Apple. This is speculated to reduce time in production as the process of cutting parts of metals to fit the watch could be bypassed.
The technique would involve the use of “Binder Jetting” 3-D printing technology. The print is fast cast on a powdered material. It is then recast on the watch with the use of heat.
The next series of smartwatches would be released by Apple on September 12th but it is unlikely that the customers could expect 3-D technology being used in these products.
The outcome of this experiment would determine if this technique would be replicated for other Apple products as well. The technique would also be implemented for the production of Titanium Ultra Watch but this would be taken up at a later stage in 2024 and not for the current batch of watches.
Currently Apple is highly dependent on China for production and is exploring options to reduce the dependency. This could also have an effect on the selling price of the product which takes into account the cost incurred during the production stage.
