In a targeted effort to scrutinize the compliance of food and beverage establishments in the city, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has closed down 21 pubs for breaches of their license conditions. This action was initiated just three days after a city cafe was severely damaged due to a cylinder explosion.
A closer look at the number of pubs inspected and the notices issued reveals variations across different zones. For example, in the East Zone, 63 out of the 69 inspected restaurants received notices, and in RR Nagar, all 29 inspected restaurants were served notices.
Of the 21 restaurants that were shut down, a majority were located in the South (7), East (6), and West (5) zones. In total, BBMP's health officers inspected 280 restaurants and issued notices to 167 of them.
Notably, Geometry Gastropub, Cube X, Magnus Care, Talli Terrance, Lit Lounge Cafe, and Heart Breaker Pub were closed without prior notice on October 21.
During these unannounced inspections, BBMP officials scrutinized the establishments' trade licenses, assessed kitchen cleanliness, and checked for the presence of fire-safety measures.
This crackdown follows a fire incident at Mudpipe Cafe in Koramangala, which held a license for catering food but was found to be violating regulations by providing hookah to customers. Officials intend to continue this operation until all restaurants are covered.
