Most of us sit for hours together at our offices daily. However, if the chair on which we sit is not good enough, chances of dying increase by 16%.
As per a research conducted by the journal JAMA Network Open in Taiwan with 4,81,688 participants over approximately 13 years, those who got themselves glued to their office chambers exposed themselves to a 34 per cent greater risk of dying from diseases related to cardiovascular causes.
Secondly, there is a 16 per cent increased likelihood of death from all causes.
More on the issue
When we sit, we tend to put more pressure on our bodies. As we don’t move frequently, things begin to go wrong.
Sitting for long hours without breaks can lead to obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and unhealthy cholesterol levels.
In fact, sitting is the new smoking! If we sit for eight hours on the trot, with no physical activities whatsoever, the effects can be as dangerous as smoking itself!
Measures to check the effects
For every 1 hour, take an active break for 10 minutes. At the office space itself, try to be physically active by moving around. Companies, on their part, can set up mini gyms or exercise areas as well.
