The residence, occupied by Venkataramani and her son Satish, became the target of the attack. Investigations have identified the suspect as Subramani, a relative of the family. According to the police complaint, tensions between the families have been brewing for nearly eight years after Parvati, another relative, borrowed ₹5 lakh from Venkataramani to fund her daughter Mahalakshmi’s wedding. Despite repeated reminders, the amount was never repaid.

The matter reportedly flared up again during a recent family wedding, where demands for repayment led to arguments and alleged threats. Days later, the attempted arson occurred.

At the time of the incident, Satish was at work, while his mother and brother, Mohan Das, were inside the house. Subramani is said to have poured petrol on the main door, shoe rack, and bedroom window before setting it ablaze. Neighbours quickly intervened, dousing the fire and alerting the residents.

Though no injuries were reported, the entrance and windows suffered fire damage. CCTV footage confirmed Subramani’s involvement, showing him nearly catching fire himself during the act. Police at Viveknagar have registered an FIR, and further investigations are underway.
