The tragic suicide of Bengaluru-based techie Atul Subhash has drawn widespread attention and sparked debates about family laws and societal pressures. Subhash died by suicide on December 9, leaving behind a detailed 24-page note and a 90-minute video alleging harassment and extortion by his wife’s family.

Shivakumar Gunare, DCP, Whitefield, confirmed that a case has been filed under Section 108 of the BNS, related to abetment to suicide, at Marathahalli Police Station. “A complaint has been lodged by the deceased’s brother. They say multiple cases were filed against him in Uttar Pradesh. Family members of his wife demanded money for settling issues against him. His death note will also be a part of the investigation,” said Gunare.

The case has ignited political and social commentary. BJP MP Kangana Ranaut expressed shock, stating, “His video is heart-wrenching…. The case is infested with communism, socialism, and feminism. The extortion of crores which was beyond his capacity is condemnable... Nevertheless, we cannot use the example of a wrong woman to torture other women.”

BJP MP Tejasvi Surya called for a review of family laws. “I think the time has come for us to review many of these family-related legislations and introduce gender neutrality to protect both partners in a marriage. The family is the founding block of society, and legislations misused by one partner can harm this institution,” he said.
