In a significant move, the Union Cabinet has approved the expansion of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), extending health insurance coverage to all senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of income level. This decision is expected to benefit an additional 6 crore individuals from 4.5 crore families.

Announcing the expansion, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi had committed that all senior citizens above the age of 70 years will be covered under Ayushman Bharat. Families already covered under the scheme with senior citizens will receive an additional Rs 5 lakh top-up coverage."
Under the revised scheme, every eligible senior citizen will receive a health card that simplifies access to healthcare services. The scheme offers Rs 5 lakh coverage annually per family, and in families with multiple senior citizens, the coverage is shared.
This expansion aims to address the rising healthcare needs of the elderly, who typically face higher medical expenses. The removal of income restrictions ensures that senior citizens from all backgrounds can access much-needed healthcare without financial strain.
The initiative is especially beneficial for nuclear families, where healthcare expenses for elderly members can be difficult to manage. By expanding coverage, the government aims to provide better health security to India's aging population.
