In what is unprecedented, Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina fled the violence-hit country after resigning, as a result of a 45-minute ultimatum given to her by the Bangladesh Army. This drastic turn of events comes as a result of a month-long anti-government protests led by students, against a freedom fighters reservation quota on government jobs. These protests eventually led to over a 100 deaths in the country.

Haseena touched base at India’s Hindon Airbase, on the outskirts of New Delhi on a Bangladesh Airforce C-130 military aircraft. She later met Indian National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, amid tight security being provided to her until her possible journey to London.
As the people of Bangladesh appeared to cheer her exit from the country, the former PM hoped to seek political asylum in the UK. However, these speculations have not yet been confirmed. British Foreign secretary, David Lemmy has called for an independent UN enquiry into the turmoil that has unfolded in Bangladesh over the last month. For now, Haseena remains under protection in India.
PM Modi has been briefed on the developments in India’s neighbourhood in a cabinet committee on security meeting last night. India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has also met PM Modi and Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi briefing them on the developments. While the situation remains tense in the region, India’s border Security Force put the India-Bangladesh border on high-alert for the foreseeable future.
