To ease traffic congestion and bring order to chaotic parking across Bengaluru, the BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) is set to collaborate with the city’s traffic police in carrying out towing operations more efficiently. The initiative aims to resolve long-standing confusion over responsibility and enforcement in vehicle towing.

Previously, the towing drive was largely overseen by the traffic police. However, citing provisions under the BBMP Act, the civic body has now decided to step in and assist. BBMP will provide towing vehicles and some staff, while the traffic police will deploy personnel to accompany and manage the towing operations.
Officials say this joint effort will be concentrated on traffic-prone and high-congestion areas, where illegal or unregulated parking often causes severe bottlenecks. However, a major hurdle remains: BBMP does not currently have enough towing vehicles in its fleet.
To overcome this, the civic body is exploring two options:
- Purchasing new towing vehicles, which would be a longer-term investment.
- Hiring private vehicles on contract, which would allow for faster deployment. In such cases, BBMP may choose to only hire drivers, while the traffic police and BBMP staff coordinate on-site enforcement.
Senior officials from both BBMP and the traffic department are currently in discussions to finalize the modalities of this partnership. The move is expected to bring much-needed relief in congested zones and streamline the process of dealing with improperly parked vehicles.
