Promised revival of Indira Canteens in Bengaluru remains unfulfilled

Government has not granted approval to BBMP to initiate new tenders

BBMP had submitted a tender proposal to government in June

Three months have passed since the Congress government assumed power in Karnataka, yet the promised revival of Indira Canteens in Bengaluru remains unfulfilled.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s commitment to this endeavor remains unacted upon, as the government has not yet granted approval to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to initiate new tenders.

Back in June, the BBMP submitted a tender proposal to the government, but it is still awaiting the green light for its execution.

Presently, out of the 175 canteens, 163 are operational. Despite the government’s pledge to establish 50 additional canteens in the city, the BBMP has not yet proposed any plans for constructing these new facilities.

These canteens are known for offering breakfast at ₹5 and lunch and dinner at ₹10 each. The upcoming tender was expected to maintain these price points, with a total cost of ₹67 for three meals to be covered by the contractor, subsidized with ₹42 from the BBMP.

Furthermore, the BBMP has not settled outstanding bills with the contractors. In addition to this, they announced in June that the menu would be revised to include items like Ragi mudde, bread-jam, Mangaluru buns, and Chapati.

Sources indicate that once the BBMP issues the tender, the work to renovate and reopen closed canteens will commence.
