In a heartwarming initiative, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has extended its 'Bite-Free Locality' campaign to feed stray dogs across the city. Launched on October 17, the program initially began with 10 feeding spots and has now grown to 135 locations spanning 28 constituencies.

Over 100 hotels and restaurants have joined the effort, providing meals for around 1,000 street dogs daily. The campaign primarily utilizes surplus food from participating establishments, supplemented by boiled rice and chicken in some cases.

BBMP marshals collect food from hotels, which is then distributed by pourakarmikas (sanitation workers). Signboards have been installed at feeding sites, indicating food and water bowl locations. The initiative is supported by Sahavarthin Animal Welfare Trust, whose founder, Sadhana Hegde, emphasized the project’s role in understanding the challenges faced by feeders.

The civic body plans to scale the campaign significantly, with the next target set at 5,000 feeding spots citywide, aiming for eventual expansion to 10,000. The goal is to establish localized ownership of feeding areas, ensuring sustainability.

The initiative marks a significant step toward improving the welfare of Bengaluru’s stray dogs while encouraging community participation.
