To ensure Bengaluru is prepared for the upcoming monsoon, BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath has directed civic officials to take comprehensive preventive measures to avoid rain-related issues such as flooding and waterlogging.

In a meeting held on Thursday, Girinath instructed officials to invoke the Disaster Management Act and complete ongoing works in key flood-prone areas like Sai Layout, Pai Layout, Kendriya Vihar Apartment, Kogilu Cross, Iblur Junction, Abbigere Kere Kodi, Mysore Road and near Gali Anjaneya Swamy Temple before the rains begin.

Out of 209 flood-prone locations in the city, work has been completed in 166 areas and the remaining 43 must be addressed immediately. He emphasized that officials should personally visit these locations and ensure proper solutions are in place.

To prevent waterlogging at 180 key road spots, BBMP officials were asked to work in coordination with Bengaluru Traffic Police and clear roadside gratings to allow free flow of rainwater.

Girinath suggested that officials from BESCOM and BWSSB be assigned to BBMP control rooms ahead of the monsoon. He called for an immediate list of officers by department, along with SDRF and NDRF teams and ensured that equipment and materials needed for emergencies are stocked in the control rooms.

The commissioner also stressed the regular cleaning of Storm Water Drains (SWD) using earthmovers and asked for a detailed two-month cleaning plan. He noted that 30 teams are ready to respond to fallen trees or branches during storms and urged officials to act quickly on citizen complaints.

The BBMP’s proactive approach aims to minimize disruptions and ensure public safety during the upcoming rainy season.
