In a bold move towards cleaner and more efficient urban sanitation, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has introduced the advanced ‘City Cat’ vehicle to enhance the city's solid waste management system. The initiative comes as a significant step in supporting the relentless efforts of over 18,500 pourakarmikas who work daily to manage Bengaluru’s massive waste output, estimated at nearly 6,000 tonnes per day.

Manufactured by the renowned Switzerland-based company Bucher, the City Cat is a state-of-the-art road cleaning machine that marks its debut in India through Bengaluru. After a successful trial run, BBMP has begun deploying these vehicles in high-footfall areas across the city, with plans to expand their presence in the near future.

The City Cat vehicle is equipped with modern features designed for both efficiency and sustainability. Its 360-degree rotating cleaning section allows for comprehensive road coverage, while its environment-friendly technology helps control PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels, crucial for combating air pollution. A digital control panel, low fuel consumption, and the ability to collect a wide variety of waste make it highly versatile.

One of the key benefits is that it reduces the physical burden on sanitation workers, offering them a safer and more secure working environment. The City Cat can operate at speeds of up to 25 km/h, ensuring quick and thorough cleaning across vast urban stretches.

This initiative is part of BBMP’s broader vision of building a Swachh (Clean) Bengaluru through world-class technologies and sustainable practices. The success of this program, however, also depends on active public participation, highlighting the need for citizen cooperation in maintaining urban cleanliness.
