In a pioneering move, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has launched a Combined Vaccine Programme to immunize 1.84 lakh stray dogs against multiple infectious diseases. This initiative, the first of its kind by any civic body in India, aims to curb the spread of deadly canine diseases and prevent zoonotic infections from affecting humans.

Speaking at the launch, BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath emphasized the significance of expanding vaccination beyond rabies. Apart from rabies, stray dogs are vulnerable to several fatal diseases, which could also pose a threat to public health. This vaccination drive is crucial for both animal welfare and human safety, he said.

Officials highlighted that the Combined Vaccine will protect strays from five major infectious diseases, reducing risks for both animals and citizens. The programme complements BBMP’s ongoing Animal Birth Control (ABC) and Anti-Rabies Vaccination (ARV) initiatives.

To support the project, the BBMP has allocated ₹4.98 crore for vaccine procurement and cold storage infrastructure. The civic body’s 2023 stray dog survey estimated 2.79 lakh strays in the city, with plans to vaccinate over 50% in the first phase.

Authorities believe this initiative will set a benchmark for other urban bodies in India, significantly improving public health and animal welfare in Bengaluru.
