Bengaluru’s civic authorities have been directed to remove concrete and paving materials surrounding roadside trees in an effort to safeguard urban greenery. A recent directive from the Forest, Ecology and Environment Department mandates the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to clear a minimum radius of one metre around tree trunks of any non-permeable materials, including cement, stone, tar, and interlock pavers.

This decision follows concerns that tree roots are being choked by these coverings, which inhibit the inflow of air and water. The order emphasises that such practices, adopted during BBMP’s greening and footpath development projects, are detrimental to tree health, ultimately weakening the roots and making trees more vulnerable to toppling during heavy winds and rains.

The blocked access to nutrients and moisture not only stunts growth but also poses a public safety risk, as unstable trees are more likely to fall, potentially endangering lives and damaging property.

The move aligns with environmental regulations and is a response to the National Green Tribunal’s directives aimed at enhancing urban tree sustainability. Officials believe that removing concrete encroachments will allow deeper root penetration, helping trees to anchor more securely and thrive in the urban landscape.

BBMP has been instructed to implement the clearance process across its jurisdiction immediately, marking a significant step towards improving the health and resilience of Bengaluru’s urban forest.
