In a significant move aimed at ensuring the safety of paying guest (PG) accommodations, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has closed 21 PG facilities in Bengaluru for failing to meet health and safety standards. The crackdown, which occurred on Thursday, is part of a city-wide drive focusing on enforcing regulations in PG accommodations to safeguard the well-being of residents.

According to reports, the BBMP acted after repeated warnings to operators to rectify safety lapses went unheeded. Of the 21 facilities closed, only one was authorised, while the remaining 20 were operating without proper authorisation. The closures were carried out under Sections 305 and 308 of the BBMP Act, 2020.
BBMP officials have identified a total of 2,193 authorised PGs under its jurisdiction. Out of these, 1,578 are in compliance with the rules, while 615 have been found to violate safety protocols.
The BBMP has established strict guidelines for PGs, including the installation of CCTV cameras, adherence to fire safety standards, and providing adequate space for residents. The civic body also mandates that PGs must have valid licenses and maintain hygienic living conditions, among other regulations.
The crackdown is expected to continue as the BBMP aims to ensure compliance across the city’s PG accommodations.
