In commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on October 2nd, which marks the Swachh Bharat Diwas, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has launched the annual Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) fortnight program from September 15th to October 2nd.
This initiative, a crucial component of the Jan Andolan for Swachhata, aims to foster active engagement from all states. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has also embraced this endeavor, implementing it across various locations within the city.
In anticipation of Swachh Bharat Diwas on October 2nd, BBMP has undertaken cleanliness campaigns throughout Bengaluru. BBMP has commenced diverse cleanliness initiatives in collaboration with volunteers, NGO groups, students from schools and colleges, pourakarmikas, and BBMP marshals.
Several notable locations, including Bannerghatta National Park, Ramakrishna Mutt, and National College, were cleaned on September 16th. On September 17th, cleanliness drives were executed across East, West, South, Yelhanka, and Bommanahalli zones.
More than 15 locations were targeted as part of these cleanup operations, encompassing places such as Cubbon Park, Gandhi Bazaar, Lalbagh, Yediyur Lake, Kemp Fort Mall, ISKON temple, Allalasandar Lake, Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, 29 main road BTM layout, Ragi Gudda Temple, the vicinity near Rachenahalli in Thanisandra, Royal Meenakshi Mall, and other shopping complexes, where awareness campaigns discouraged the use of single-use plastic.
The cleanliness activities encompassed tasks such as removing waste from key areas, refurbishing, painting, cleaning, and branding sanitation facilities with Swachh Bharat Mission-themed wall paintings and dustbins.
Additionally, initiatives like Swachhata quizzes, plantation drives, swachhata pledges and swachhata runs were integrated into the city’s cleanliness drives.
