In a bid to enhance healthcare accessibility and sustainability, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has approved the deployment of 144 electric scooters for staff at urban primary healthcare centres (UPHCs). The initiative is part of the city’s Rs 413-crore Brand Bengaluru health budget action plan.

Under the scheme, each of the 144 UPHCs managed by the BBMP will receive an electric scooter to support various healthcare activities. These vehicles are intended to facilitate the transportation of vaccines, medical supplies, laboratory consumables, and patient samples for diagnostic testing. Additionally, they will assist in fieldwork within designated areas.
The BBMP has allocated Rs 2.2 crore for procuring the electric vehicles (EVs) and another Rs 7 crore for 28 ambulances to cater to emergency medical needs. Nurses from the UPHCs will primarily use the EVs to administer vaccines to children, particularly those from marginalized communities, such as the families of construction workers who often do not visit hospitals for immunization.
The electric scooters will also be utilized for collecting samples from patients suffering from conditions like dengue and viral infections, ensuring quicker diagnostic processes.
This initiative reflects BBMP's commitment to integrating sustainable solutions in public health while addressing urban challenges through eco-friendly transportation.
