Bengaluru's civic body, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), is set to enhance its street-cleaning efforts by introducing 86 small battery-operated mechanical sweepers. These compact machines, smaller than an autorickshaw, are designed to clean narrow streets in densely populated commercial and market hubs, addressing the persistent issue of dust pollution.

Currently, BBMP operates 25 large truck-sized mechanical sweepers on arterial roads, primarily at night. However, these vehicles cannot access narrow bylanes in areas such as the Old Pete, Shivajinagar, and other bustling commercial zones, where dust control has long been a priority.

Under the 15th Finance Commission Grants, the Karnataka state government has allocated ₹5.8 crore for procuring these electric sweepers, each with a capacity of under two cubic meters. According to tenders issued by BBMP, the vehicles are expected to be deployed by summer 2025, following a four-month delivery period after tender finalization.

These compact sweepers will be ideal for narrow bylanes and areas where dust levels rise, especially during summer or ongoing civic works.

Local stakeholders have welcomed the initiative expressing optimism about the decision. Deploying these sweepers in Pete’s bylanes will significantly reduce dust pollution, benefiting residents and businesses alike.

The move signals BBMP’s commitment to improving air quality and cleanliness across Bengaluru’s busiest streets.
