In a decisive move to enforce property tax collection, Bengaluru’s Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath has ordered the sealing of non-residential buildings with significant overdue property taxes. The directive was issued at a recent meeting held in Malleshwaram, focusing on strategies to boost tax recovery.
Chief Commissioner Giri Nath highlighted the urgency of recovering these taxes and directed officials to intensify efforts, particularly for properties with substantial arrears and ongoing renovation disputes. He instructed Assistant Revenue Officers across BBMP zones to prioritize these cases, holding regular meetings to track progress and enforce timely collections. Officials have been urged to diligently monitor and address outstanding dues through targeted actions.

In addition to enforcement, the BBMP has reminded defaulters of the ongoing One-Time Settlement (OTS) scheme. This initiative offers property owners a chance to clear outstanding taxes without additional interest or penalties, but only until November 30, 2024. After this deadline, unpaid taxes will incur double charges beginning December 1. Property owners are encouraged to settle dues via BBMP’s online portal, BBMPtax.karnataka.gov.in.
In a related effort to streamline property documentation, Bengaluru One centers have introduced an e-khata system. By submitting required documents and a Rs. 45 fee, residents can now obtain e-khata certificates, facilitating easier access to property records, according to Giri Nath.
