  • BBMP to open 8 new vet hospitals across Bengaluru
  • Clinics to offer free/rescuer care and low-cost pet treatment
  • Experts seek 24x7 service and better coordination

In a major push for urban animal welfare, the BBMP’s Animal Husbandry Department is set to open eight new government veterinary hospitals across different city zones. These clinics will offer free treatment for rescued animals and affordable care for pet owners from lower-income groups, addressing a long-standing demand from citizens and rescue organizations.

The move comes years after nearly 60 government veterinary clinics were shut down, citing the city's reduced livestock presence. However, with a surge in the urban pet population and a growing number of animal rescue cases, the need for accessible veterinary services has become critical.

The new hospitals will be located in Jayanagar, Prakash Nagar, Talaghattapura, Garudacharpalya, Jeevanahalli, Doddabettahalli, Dasarahalli, and Vijaya Bank Layout. Old clinic buildings are being refurbished and equipped with medical facilities. Each hospital is expected to handle up to 50 cases a day, staffed exclusively by postgraduate veterinarians.

The government has allocated Rs 6.05 crore for the project, which will cover infrastructure, medicines, equipment, and staff salaries. Procurement processes for drugs, instruments, and furniture are underway.

Animal welfare groups have welcomed the initiative but urged BBMP to ensure clear guidelines, round-the-clock services, and collaboration with private shelters to meet the demands of emergency cases and complex treatments.
