In a pioneering move, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is set to establish small animal rescue centres across three city zones—Dasarahalli, East, and South. The initiative aims to rescue and treat injured or abandoned canines and cats, marking a first for any civic body in Karnataka.

The centres, part of BBMP’s animal welfare programme, will also provide treatment for abandoned pets and coordinate with NGOs for adoption. Currently, the BBMP relies on not-for-profit organisations to handle rescue operations. These new centres will allow the civic body to manage the process independently.
BBMP Special Commissioner (Health) Suralkar Vikas Kishor reportedly confirmed that a work order has been issued for the Dasarahalli zone, while tenders for the East and South zones are underway. All centres are expected to be operational within three months and will be housed in existing Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres.
Each rescue centre will include dedicated space to accommodate up to 20 animals, with staff available to provide medical care. The BBMP’s helpline (1533) will continue to handle rescue calls, and the rescued animals will be treated and returned to their original locations post-recovery.
These centres are exclusively for small animals, excluding cattle and wildlife. This initiative reflects BBMP’s commitment to improving animal welfare in Bengaluru.
