The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has pinpointed nearly 150 locations citywide for a large-scale afforestation drive, with plans to plant over 20,000 saplings. This initiative is powered by "Mapathon," an AI-based tool launched in May 2023 to help the civic body meet compensatory afforestation targets.

Using satellite imagery and spatial mapping, Mapathon identified 145 viable planting sites across Bengaluru’s eight zones. This technology ensures saplings are planted in suitable locations, avoiding areas where growth would likely fail.
The identified sites undergo on-ground verification with the help of volunteers and citizens. On government land, BBMP proceeds directly with plantation efforts, while private property owners are approached for collaboration, allowing temporary afforestation with a future removal option.
The initiative, part of the Bengaluru Climate Action Cell, also includes a virtual Mapathon via BBMP’s Tree Census dashboard, enabling citizens to suggest additional planting sites.
BBMP emphasizes planting native and medicinal plant species rather than exotic varieties to enhance ecological balance. To improve survival rates, saplings are matured for six to seven years in airbags before being planted, ensuring their resilience to harsh conditions.
BBMP aims to create a sustainable land bank for afforestation and maximize sapling survival. This innovative approach highlights Bengaluru's commitment to combating climate change and preserving green spaces.
