The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has launched an ambitious urban beautification drive under the "Brand Bengaluru – Vibrant Bengaluru" initiative, aiming to revamp the city’s aesthetics and enhance its global image. The project features LED-lit Metro pillars, artistically landscaped medians, redeveloped junctions, and decorative fountains, promising a visually striking makeover.

Backed by a ₹75 crore allocation in the 2025-26 budget—₹50 crore for aesthetic lighting and ₹25 crore for upgrading traffic junctions—the BBMP sees this as a strategic move to boost tourism and rejuvenate public spaces. However, the initiative has sparked criticism from civic groups and residents who argue that it prioritizes appearance over urgent infrastructure needs.

Citizen activists have raised concerns over the neglect of essential services like road repairs, functional footpaths, waste management, and flood prevention. Areas such as HSR Layout, Sarjapur, Carmelaram, and Panathur reportedly continue to suffer from poor infrastructure, despite repeated complaints.

Despite the backlash, some urban planners argue that aesthetically designed elements can contribute to safety and sustainability. The BBMP maintains that it has included public feedback in its planning and plans to manage ongoing maintenance through private contracts, aiming for a long-term, inclusive urban transformation.
