Here’s a surprising move from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for the residents of the Silicon City during the monsoon season. With heavy rains flooding the streets and making vehicle movement almost impossible, BBMP has proposed an unexpected solution, the “Boater” plan.

Last week’s downpours turned Bengaluru’s roads into virtual rivers, with many areas, including Sai Layout, facing severe flooding. In these locations, boats were used with assistance from the fire department to evacuate stranded residents. For two days, many citizens were stuck at home due to the flooding. In response, BBMP has announced plans to purchase boats for use during the monsoon season. The civic body has invited tenders for the purchase of seven boats, along with life jackets.
The move has received mixed reactions from Bengaluru’s residents. While some have welcomed the initiative, seeing it as a much-needed rescue measure during flooding, others have expressed frustration. "First, fix the potholes and clean the stormwater drains," many citizens demanded, criticizing the BBMP for failing to address root causes of flooding. The proposal to buy boats and life jackets, though technically justifiable, has left many wondering whether this is a long-term solution or a temporary fix for a recurring problem.
BBMP’s plan reflects its response to Bengaluru’s ever-increasing rain chaos. However, residents remain divided, some seeing it as a sign of proactive planning, others viewing it as a band-aid over deeper issues like poor infrastructure and unplanned urban growth.
