After a phenomenal performance as an opener for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), Indian batsman Abhishek Sharma has received his maiden call-up for India’s T-20 series against Zimbabwe. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a video wherein Abhishek responded to this development. “Shubman was the first to call me as soon as my name came out. I got a lot of calls and love. It was a big thing for me. When I went home I saw that everyone was already giving interviews! I hadn't even come into the picture and all my family members were giving interviews (laughs). I think that was one moment I'll always remember,” Abhishek said.

In the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Abhishek scored 484 runs at a strike rate of 204.22 and an average of 32.27 in 16 games. With Australian batsman Travis Head at the other end, the duo achieved astonishing feats such as taking SRH to the highest total of 287 runs and scoring 125 runs in the powerplay. “I just had one dream from Day 1 of professional cricket - I have to play for India. [I knew] the first call-up would be very special. That's where my journey would start. I knew if I kept working hard, I'd get my chance. But I didn't know it'll be in Zimbabwe or outside India,” Abhishek added.
