In Sanskrit, the word Lakshadweep means ‘a thousand islands’. However, in reality, it is an archipelago of 36 islands.

They are known for their pristine beaches and good landscape. They were once a part of Tipu Sultan’s empire. 

• What is the capital of these islands? 

The capital of these islands is Kavaratti. 

• How are Lakshadweep islands connected to the mainland? 

As of now, Alliance Air operates flights from Cochin, Bengaluru on a daily basis. It is said the airstrip here is not good enough to handle big flights, but expansion plans have not fructified as they have to happen at the cost of a turtle habitat. Helicopter transfers are also available from Agatti to Kavaratti.

The islands have a tropical climate. The temperature ranges from 27C to 32C
