Prateek Khandelwal, a resident of Harlur Road in Bengaluru, has been awarded the prestigious ‘Sarvshresth Divyangjan Award’ for his pioneering work in enhancing accessibility across India.

The award was presented by President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday during a ceremony recognizing 33 individuals and institutions for their contributions to empowering persons with disabilities. The event was held to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Khandelwal’s initiative, Ramp My City, launched in 2020, has transformed over 600 public spaces in just three years, making them accessible to persons with disabilities.

The initiative spans seven cities, including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Gurugram, Goa, and Kochi. Efforts include installing ramps, accessible toilets, designated parking, Braille features, and signage in offices, schools, hospitals, parks, restaurants, and tourist spots. Bengaluru alone saw over 300 sites transformed, while cities like Mumbai and Gurugram saw significant improvements.

Khandelwal’s journey began after a spinal cord injury in 2014 left him paralyzed. Frustrated by the lack of accessibility, he founded Ramp My City to bridge the gap. However, he reportedly acknowledged challenges in convincing stakeholders to prioritize accessibility despite legal mandates under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act.

“This is a societal issue that requires greater enforcement and awareness,” he reportedly emphasized, adding that his team collaborates with CSR initiatives and government bodies to drive change.
