  • Neha Biswal, an Odisha native working in Bengaluru, called Bengalureans “brainless” after being splashed by rainwater
  • Her video rant went viral, prompting heavy backlash from locals on social media
  • This is the latest in a string of outsider vs local conflicts in the city

A recent video shared on social media has triggered massive outrage among Bengalureans after a young woman from Odisha, identified as Neha Biswal, made derogatory comments about the city and its residents. The video, now widely circulated online, shows Neha expressing frustration after a passing vehicle splashed water on her during a heavy downpour in Bengaluru.

Angered by the incident, she went on a verbal tirade, claiming that "Bengalureans have no brains" and referred to the locals as "illiterate," citing that drivers recklessly speed through waterlogged roads even during heavy rain. Her sweeping generalization about the city’s people has drawn strong criticism from local users, many of whom have taken to social media to defend Bengaluru and condemn her statements.

This incident follows a string of recent flashpoints involving outsiders expressing dissatisfaction or behaving inappropriately in Bengaluru. In previous instances, altercations between auto drivers and young women over cab bookings, as well as a viral video of a North Indian woman hitting a driver with a slipper, have stirred similar sentiments.

While it is natural for individuals to vent frustration, social media users have pointed out that making blanket statements against an entire city or its people is unjustified and deeply disrespectful, especially from those who migrate here for livelihood and opportunities.

As the video continues to go viral, Neha Biswal has found herself at the receiving end of widespread criticism from Bengalureans who feel hurt and disrespected by her comments.
